Problem

I’m using ChatGPT Version 26.924.22138, which includes a feature called “Mini & Pets.” Its default keyboard shortcut, ⌥Space, conflicts with Raycast. The shortcut also has no visible setting in the app. Although searching Settings finds “Keyboard Shortcuts > Show Mini,” the option itself remains hidden.

Root Cause

The newer ChatGPT desktop app (/Applications/ChatGPT.app, bundle ID com.openai.codex) registers this global shortcut itself.

I confirmed this by decompiling the app’s app.asar and inspecting its logic:

  • The command ID is openAvatarOverlay (“Show Mini,” the floating mini/avatar-pet window), and its scope is os-global.
  • The macOS default shortcut is hard-coded as Alt+Space (equivalent to Option+Space).
  • The code includes built-in Raycast conflict detection. It reads Raycast’s configuration, looks for Option-49, and clears the default shortcut if it detects a conflict. On my machine, this check failed to detect the conflict, so the shortcut remained enabled. This is why the setting was unavailable in the UI.

Plan

Since the app supports shortcut configuration, there should be a corresponding configuration file. We can disable the shortcut by editing that file.

Shortcuts are persisted in ~/.codex/keybindings.json (that is, under $CODEX_HOME). If you haven’t customized any shortcuts, this file may not exist, and the app uses its defaults.

The command for Mini & Pets is openAvatarOverlay. Set its key to null to disable the shortcut:

Steps

  1. Quit ChatGPT completely.
  2. Create or edit ~/.codex/keybindings.json with the contents shown above, then save the file.
  3. Restart ChatGPT.
